Democratic U.S. Reps. Henry Cuellar and Vicente Gonzalez are likely headed to Washington...

Republicans fiercely targeted three South Texas congressional districts this year, but it appears they'll only come away with one victory to aid in their quest to regain control of the U.S. House of Representatives. The GOP has spent millions of dollars to flip the traditionally Democratic region after making inroads among Latinos in South Texas two years ago, especially as Republicans hone in on border security as their top issue.

Based on 2020 election results, the 15th was the closest congressional contest in Texas this year. Former President Donald Trump won there by less than 3 percentage points.De La Cruz first ran for the seat two years ago, when she came within 3 percentage points of unseating incumbent U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez of McAllen.

In the 28th district, incumbent U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar, a Democrat, faced his toughest re-election bid yet from Republican Cassy Garcia, a former staffer for U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz. But he is expected to secure another term, counting about 56 percent of the vote with about three-quarters of precincts reporting.
