Johannesburg mayor, Mpho Phalatse, says the damage caused to the City’s infrastructure due to the recent heavy rainfall stands at R300 million, and she expects this figure to rise.

Addressing the media in Soweto, Phalatse gave an update on the work being done by the City, in response to the flooding and the cost of the damage to infrastructure.

. 16 people lost their lives, many of whom during a baptism ceremony in the Jukskei River. A three-month old baby believed to have been part of this ceremony is yet to be found. Phalatse says she’s written to the National and Provincial governments to declare a Local State of Disaster. Nomsa Sibiya — who lives with four children including one who suffers from epilepsy — says every time it rains heavily, water from a nearby dam floods their homes.
