Data is valuable, but it's hard to find and use.

Tech leaders are often hyper-focused on the outputs of a data strategy and will lean into solutions that paint the picture of recognizing business value. This is one of the reasons why every organization has a Tableau or PowerBI license, but only around half have a data catalog. From a leadership perspective, this makes sense. Flashy dashboards show off well in the boardroom.

By prioritizing outcomes and not focusing on the pipelines that the team will use to deliver on these goals, tech leaders are slowly but surely compromising their ability to scale. The result of this has been the proliferation of highly technical metadata management platforms that may improve data governance but don't improve data access.
