The Birmingham metro area is becoming more popular as a destination for renters, which could have consequences for those seeking to lease a home, a recent report suggests.

Birmingham is the 19th most sought-after rental destination in the U.S. and the 6th most sought-after destination in the south according to theThis could mean a harder time finding a place to rent, according to Bennie Waller, a William Cary Hulsey faculty fellow in the Culverhouse College of Business at The University of Alabama.

Since this time last year, Birmingham has risen 18 positions in the RentCafe rankings. This sudden interest can be contributed to the city’s rent increase percentages staying consistently lower than the national average, Waller said. “The rents have gone up, but they have gone up at a much slower rate over time,” Waller said in a recent press release from the Alabama Center for Real Estate .
