The House Finance Committee received a record number of submissions for its pre-budget consultations this year, and also provided the most recommendations in any year since the election of the Trudeau government. The committee’s report ahead of the 2024 budget noted that it received 858 written briefs as part of the process, “the largest number ever received.” In comparison, 706 briefs were received in 2023, 495 in 2022, and 792 in 2021.
” Among the 17 recommendations related to net-zero, the committee asked that the government improve Bill C-50, which is intended to ensure that jobs are created and protected as a transition is made from fossil fuels to sustainable energy, to ensure that unions are included in a proposed partnership council; increase the Future Fund’s budget; pass laws requiring banks to have climate commitment plans and targets; and develop a standardized “net-zero aligned investment” definition.
