BRAS D'OR - Most of Mark Jantunen's pickled onions and turnips, hot sauces and other farm products are still locked inside the Cape Breton Farmers' Market space in Sydney.between the market and the building's landlords Phil Dubinsky and Dianne MacPhee, they have denied the market's management access inside. The ordeal has left vendors caught in the middle, with many of them facing financial losses without access to what they sell.
“The people that I really feel bad for are the people who have kitchen equipment. One guy has a big commercial juicer. As a small business, to go out and buy pots, pans, steam trays … it’s not an expense people can just incur,” Jantunen said. “Especially when the income source has just stopped for that business.
Vassallo’s business, like many of the market’s stands, will soon be into busy season as crops start growing. The best crops come around June and July but even then, he said “nobody knows” if the farmers’ market will be back to business as usual by then. However, she said the market’s governance attempted to meet and discuss its debt with the landlords to no avail. Singer added it hasn’t been made clear how much they owe.
