Funeral costs vary widely between states and service providerWhen their mother died two years ago, Jane Sinclair and her sister organised a basic cremation without a service through large Victorian funeral provider Tobin Brothers.It cost about $5,000, and by far the largest part of the charge was a professional service fee of almost $3,200.

She complained to the company and asked for a breakdown of the charge, and Tobin Brothers responded in writing. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said that customers have a right to request an itemised bill.
