AUDIO: Concerns about industry meddling in alcohol harm reduction

The national alcohol strategy was meant to be finalised in 2018, after five years of preparation by health experts. But some of those experts are warning that the version that's awaiting COAG approval has lost its teeth.

Background Briefing has obtained a leaked copy of the latest version that's waiting for approval from all jurisdictions, and it reveals a watering down of commitments to tackling alcohol harm.

I’m campaigning hard on this. It’s utterly ridiculous.

The government makes too much money out of alcohol, smoking & gambling to meddle to much with it

The alcohol industry is not the only one profiting from people engaging in unhealthy coping behaviours because of stress (relationships, work, financial, grief, PTSD, childhood adversity). The causes of smoking, overeating, gambling, opioids, other addictions need to be addressed

Putting the fox in charge of the hen-house? Alcohol does not need to be an intrinsic part of Australian culture. If it is, that should be seen as a challenge to overcome, not the basis of a government strategy to maintain revenue.
