Gqubule-Mbeki was one of the SABC 8, who were ultimately fired for failing to follow an instruction from former COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng not to broadcast TV footage of violent protests.

Gqubule-Mbeki also says the request to her by SABC TV News Head Nothando Maseko not to cover the so called “Nenegate” saga in December 2015 was illogical and unjournalistic. Gqubule-Mbeki revealed to the State Capture Commission that Maseko asked her to asked to veer away from reporting on the firing by former President Jacob Zuma of then-Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene and its effect on the rand.
