In the first nine months of the year, car sales fell 2.5% to 1.86 million, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said. The small rise compared with what Mr Hawes described as a"pretty awful" September 2018, when sales slumped 20% due to the introduction of tougher emissions rules restricting the availability of certain vehicles.
Mr Hawes said:"Consumer confidence is being undermined by political and economic uncertainty. We need to restore stability to the market which means avoiding a no-deal Brexit and, moreover, agreeing a future relationship with the EU that avoids tariffs and barriers that could increase prices and reduce buyer choice."
Big picture, registrations have been falling pretty steadily for more than two years, and are at levels not seen since 2013.But at least sales of electric cars have been accelerating. So there's a spark of optimism among the gloom. Motoring groups have warned that the decision will leave the UK struggling to meet targets to reduce vehicle emissions.
May have something to do with this!
it's not just UK in USA Toyota sales down 10% and large trucks down 70% - the bubble economy is beginning to deflate globally & you can't blame BREXIT
Too expensive and unaffordable nothing to do with Brexit
Cars are too expensive to buy and run
If Brexit is not delivered. Then the people will bring these corporations to their knees.
PeteNorth303 What do they expect when they are banging on about climate change all the time. Why should people it new cars when we are being told they harm the environment. Can’t have it all ways.
New car market declines in first nine months of 2019 as Brexit fears hold buyers back. September registrations up just 1.3% on low volume 2018, with 343,255 joining British roads.
PeteNorth303 It's what the media hero Greta would have wanted, so not sure why anyone is complaining. Wait until you get told your iPhones are destroying the planet. Then we will see just how much everyone cares about the environment.
Well they need to stop scaring people saying diesel cars will be off our roads these new ones are cleaner than ever !
What do you expect after 10 years of austerity
Not a problem really. People just don't change cars like they used too because they don't go wrong. It's inevitable
And begins ramping up the doom, gloom and end of the world as we know it rhetoric as the countdown to Brexit draws closer... Guaranteed there will be a shortages + stockpiling + tourism ban to EU story v.soon. Perhaps the car makers need new sales wo/men...
End of the month they’ll switch to unicorn production
It's 'registration plate' not 'license plate'. This is not America.
Maybe people just don't want horrible looking, heavily computerised SUVs?
