The British arm of Cox & Kings, which traces its roots back to 1758, is on the hunt for new investors, Sky News learns.

Those assets have since been sold.

The process to find new investors for Cox & Kings' UK operations comes at a difficult time for long-established travel companies as they grapple with high fixed costs and the challenge from online rivals. While Thomas Cook, which was founded in 1941, could lay claim to being the world's oldest tour operator, Cox & Kings' roots go back significantly further.

Henry Samuel King founded a bank and shipping agency in 1868, with the two companies merging after the First World War.
