Artificial intelligence has been hailed as a monumental technology that will change the world, but coronavirus is showing that it is still in its infancy.

Big AI firms like DeepMind, OpenAI and Facebook AI have remained relatively quiet throughout the crisis.

"It's fascinating how quiet it is," said Neil Lawrence, the former director of machine learning at Amazon Cambridge. Those techniques include good, old-fashioned statistical techniques and mathematical models. The latter is used to create epidemiological models, which predict how a disease will spread through a population. Right now, these are far more useful than fields of AI like reinforcement learning and natural-language processing.In March, DeepMind announced that it hadto detail the structures of six proteins associated with SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes the Covid-19 disease.

It's not over hyped, the technology just isn't good enough yet. There are still things it needs to be able to do before we can really call it 'AI' anyways. It's way too early to give up on it.

Dogs will be more effective if they can be trained to sniff out disease.

AI is not to the point to jump in, but automation is. You'll be seeing more of it with social distancing measures in place.
