Letter: 'Why does our Legislature always seem to give in to high powered lobbyists and developers and ignore the county planning divisions and county councils?'

The area in Parleys Canyon where Granite Construction is proposing to excavate a limestone quarry, Wednesday, July 27, 2022., “How the Legislature is steamrolling residents to help a well-connected developer,” hits the nail on the head.

The passage of Senate Bill 84 is totally disingenuous and stinks of corruption. This bill was even authored by the developer Dakota Pacific.

In this case they are basically telling the residents of Summit County that their land use planning is worthless. This particular bill was designed specifically for the benefit of the real estate developer Dakota Pacific and their unwanted development at Kimball Junction. The vast majority of the citizens of Summit County do not want it.

Another example of the Legislature ignoring the residents and local planning commissions is the very recent creation of HB527 by Rep. Keven Stratton . This bill will basically prevent Salt Lake County and city from stopping the proposed Parleys Canyon gravel pit/limestone mine.

Our state Legislature should immediately cease from meddling in a city’s or county’s local planning. To not do so questions the basic reason why we have local governments in the first place and leads to serious voter disenfranchisement.

Money

One word: Oligarchy

Because enough people in Utah are fooled into thinking that they are decent people by greedy people who make money off their deception. They have also convinced themselves that it is the mark of a good Mormon to be so.

Poor Park City rich people…. going to have some middle income housing near them. :(

Because they are the legislators

Money makes the world go around🤔🤫

Probably because we keep re-electing land developers.

$$$$$

Because they don't understand the meaning of We The People. With them. It's Me, myself and I.

I don’t know because there are no rails against conflict of interest maybe 🤷‍♂️. Or maybe because of all the developers in the leg? There ought to be a law

The Trib & its rich liberal friends feign compassion, demand provision of additional housing for Utah, ........ until & unless it means building in their posh Park City backyard. Crocodile tears!!!! hahahaha

The easy answer is that they can collect money and power with no concern of not getting re-elected.

Almost like our political institutions are run by a class of lobbyists who throw money at career opportunists to maintain their economic security at the cost of regular people who they distract by rehashing cultural debates about which minorities should or shouldn't be oppressed.

Because the rich and the powerful can buy the needed politicians to get their way. We peons don't have that kind of money...

Money talks.

Because county planning/councils have, in the past decades, created a situation where nothing gets built. No housing, no new projects, nothing gets built. On housing, NIMBY councils have created a huge crisis — and yes, the state will have to ignore “critics” to solve them.

Because Utah is corrupt 👿

Why does it always seem that pertinent questions like this are never asked at election time when the sheeple dutifully line up for Republicans?

It seems local government and citizens are being ignored with several big projects that feel like they were a done deal from the start. This gravel pit is a big one. No one in SLC wants it either. Then the Gondola in little cottonwood. No one wants it. Yet it pushes forward.
