In a letter to Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the companies urged the government to follow through on a pledge in its election manifesto that it would give refugees the right to work.
“Some of us also encourage your government to provide registered refugees with the right to own/operate a business legally,” they said in the letter that was sent by the Tent Partnership for Refugees. As of October this year, there are some 177,800 refugees and asylum seekers registered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Malaysia. The country lacks legal or administrative framework regulating the status and rights of refugees in Malaysia.
The Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs had estimated that allowing refugees to work legally would, by 2024, increase Malaysia’s annual GDP by at least RM3bil, and potentially much more. Human Resource Minister M. Kulasegaran recently announced that the Cabinet will be making its final decision on the matter between Dec 10 and 15.
Don't be fooled by capitalist seeking for cheap labours
CHEAP LABOR. cheaper than hiring Bangladeshi, Nepalese and Indonesians
stop suppressing wages of locals by employing foreign workers G should repatriate foreign workers perventing money outflow
Many Malaysian is lazy
Those companies and NGOs are hypocrites. Ask them to vacate their positions first .will they? Companies want cheap labour so they can kick Malaysians! It is disgusting Star is reporting this! Report the comments of people who say NO too! U all are selfish
Train the refugees & allow them to work which in return government can earn tax & don't need to waste tax payer $ to support, also refugees can live a more normal life.
Hire locals first Unless the locals are too proud or lazy, even with an empty pocket and prefers hand outs.
