Education Minister Dan Tehan says more widespread closures of schools in an attempt to prevent the spread of coronavirus is part of an education ministers’ “contingency planning,” but “at the moment there is no need for this type of action”.

A number of schools across Australia have closed briefly due to outbreaks of coronavirus and suggestions have been made to extend the upcoming school holidays to further prevent the spread of the virus. Mr Tehan told Sky News “we are not at that stage yet but as we know the virus will continue to spread across the nation”.

Any move to implement further action “would ultimately depend on medical advice,” he said. “There are all sorts of contingency plans taking place to make sure that we can take the necessary steps if we need to, to keep the public safe. “We are making sure we are prepared but at this case, unless there are students or teachers who have the virus, it is very much business as usual for schools.
