'You just can't see an end to it': Fears over-45s are being shut out of job market

This age group faces ongoing discrimination, with a "longstanding" perception they are less physically capable and have inferior skills and abilities

According to Australian Bureau of Statistics and government data, workforce participation in the 45–54 age group has been slowly climbing since the late 1970s, from about 70 per cent to above 80 per cent in 2018.As of February, Australia was home to 2.9 million Australians aged between 45 and 64, and in March 180,500 of them were unemployed .

Ms Marie is doing a Certificate III in Business Administration to update her software skills to land a data entry job."You just can't see an end to it because you're not getting anywhere."According to employment agency, Matchworks, the over-45 age group has one of the toughest times getting work. "I don't really understand when we see people who are over the age of 60 and still have five years of employment, at least, left in them, often more — and the average day in work coming down — why employers wouldn't say all workers are a good option," she said.

Of course.

Strange that his is news. It has been a fact for the past 20 years. Worse now that the 20-30 year olds are so much smarter and treat us “oldies” with contempt. The only good thing is that ageing cannot be avoided.

Not exactly a new, revealing break through story now, is it.

Anyone over 50 years who have looked for employment even with an excellent CV know it is near on impossible to get full time employment. The excuses are endless. Start your own business if you can, put your time and energy into that you have a chance at success.

That's been going on for years, as far back as the 80's I believe, how about doing a little digging around and finding out why!

Well Minister M Cash better roll up the designers sleaved and get cracking to fix this

And spoon many over over 55 have significant health issues but are forced to barely exist on Newstart because its just too damn hard to get DSP. People are literally dying before being approved. It can take years and the stress alone pushes people to the point where they give up.

Despite govt references to 'Ageism' absolutely nothing is done about this discrimination. So much for 'equality' of opportunity. In addition, Industry is the poorer for not having the intelligence to value experience.

but hey, that is how the job service providers make a fortune.

This was true pre coronavirus, now you don't stand a chance. It won't be long before the government and media return to their daily vilification of the unemployed.

It seems the gov has stopped mentioning rents affordability

Try it at 60

In certain industries where experience is highly valued, age might be ignored. Reagan became the president when he was 70 years old.

This is not new

As business managers become younger, perhaps they also feel threatened by older 'parental' figures too. Older managers employ more older workers.

Because the over-45s know the law and won't be screwed over by dodgy employers.

OK, the problem here is very clear. They are old...

I got a job at 49 ,two years ago. Another in my intake was 52. Many government jobs don't discriminate . I am looking at my 3rd change of role within the organisation due to internal advertising as well. Labour hire is also a good option. I was never without work for long.

This is very real! We need pension age brought back down to 60 again!

Also increasingly tough for workers under 30. And between 30 and 45. And over 54.

If this continues all australians over the age of 45 who are not employed should be given a basic wage- Not a pension - a basic wage because, especially the women are in this position because of govt policies.

YES!

Fears This has been going on for decades.

Ageism is alive and well....

This is a very real situation

Fears? It's already happened! This will be used an an excuse to make it even worse.
