KUALA LUMPUR: The management of a shoe distributor will be called in by Bukit Aman in connection with the allegation that Malaysia's coat of arms (Jata Negara) was besmirched.

Bukit Aman CID deputy director Deputy Comm Mior Faridalatrash Wahid said police had started investigations under Section 5 of the Emblems and Names Act 1963, as well as Section 233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act."We expect to record their statements soon," he said when contacted on Sunday .

On Saturday, Commmunications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah said action still had to be taken against a shoe distributor said to have printed Malaysia's coat of arms on the inside of their shoes even though the company had apologised. He said stern action was needed as national emblems must be respected, adding that this was the second such incident after copies of a book featuring a logo similar to the Jata Negara were seized recently.

"Apologising does not work for me now. When a mistake is made, it must be investigated, and if found guilty, appropriate punishment must be meted out. If not, it's very easy to make a mistake and then apologise as such an incident can recur."I will monitor this case too and forward it for stern action to be taken," he had told reporters.

Photographs of shoes with the coat of arms and an apology letter from the company dated July 17 went viral recently on social media."We have also explained to the authorities regarding the misunderstanding.
