Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appointed his close ally and deputy Chrystia Freeland as finance minister on Tuesday and promised 'bold new solutions' to help Canada recover from the pandemic.

OTTAWA - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appointed his close ally and deputy Chrystia Freeland as finance minister on Tuesday and promised “bold new solutions” to help Canada recover from the pandemic.

Freeland, who is considered Trudeau’s most likely successor as Liberal Party leader, spearheaded negotiations of the United States-Mexico-Canada trade pact in 2017 and 2018 as Canada’s foreign minister. Canada should embrace “bold new solutions”, he said, citing the need to do a better job of protecting the vulnerable and greening an economy that relies heavily on fossil fuel exports.

Freeland’s appointment comes after a tumultuous week for the government that ended in Morneau’s departure. Sources told Reuters that Morneau and Trudeau had clashed over pandemic spending, including on green initiatives the prime minister views as key for the economy. “The restart of our economy needs to be green. It also needs to be equitable and inclusive,” she told reporters, declining to give more details of her policies.

Canada Finance Minister Steps Down Amid Charity UproarCanada’s Finance Minister Bill Morneau said he was stepping down, the biggest casualty to date from a scandal tying the Liberal government to a charity with close links to the family of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Trudeau is next... Perhaps someone can visualize and build an ap that can create a network to assist others who don't drive or have mobility difficulties in providing rides to 'ballot box drop-off' locations.
