“You ready to be indoctrinated?” a senior manager asks new recruit Harper Stern at a breakfast meeting for a group of graduates.but the third week for the new recruits at Pierpoint & Co., a fictional investment bank in London’s financial district. Harper is one of a cohort of eager-to-please 20-somethings who have earned a place on the bank’s prestigious graduate program, which combines elements of an entry-level job at the firm with structured training.
“Look at the guy or gal next to you,” the graduates are told as they sit in an amphitheater-style meeting room, dressed in crisp new suits and company-branded puffer jackets. “Do you think you’re better than them? Maybe you are. But half of you won’t be here in six months.” And so the tone is set for a process which sits somewhere at the intersection between an elimination-style reality TV show and initiation into a cult. The question for viewers, however, is what are all these ambitious young things actually doing here?
What we know is that we have a group of ruthless high achievers from different socioeconomic backgrounds and cultures competing for a limited number of permanent jobs at what we’re told is the world’s “preeminent financial institution.” In six months’ time, they will be evaluated via a process called RIF—that’s short for ‘reduction in function’—where their supervisors will decide who is worth hiring for good.
