Australia’s Got Talent
, and fabulous fundraising and awareness for our chosen charity, Women’s Community Shelters. After an extraordinary year for Hummingsong Community Choirs we had just over 500 members across six locations on Sydney’s northern beaches and north shore, extensive waiting lists, and increasing demand for choirs to be established around the country. We were ready – for expansion, for spreading the joy of community music-making.
If nothing else, 2020 has taught us to think quickly on our feet. We became tech experts overnight. We "Zoomed" ourselves out. Our conductors and guest online presenters rose to every challenge. We mined the depths of our creative reserves to keep our choral community alive. The Hummingsong Academy was born.Enough is enough, though. Many members have not gone online, but into hibernation.
This is a game changer for us. Choirs in NSW can now truly be back in business. I'm elated, but the tendency to tear up is only just around the corner. I don’t think I realised what a toll it was taking, rolling with the punches. Not being able to do the thing you love, that gives you your sense of purpose, is suffocating.
This announcement is, literally, music to our ears. We can rebuild our community, find our voices again, create beautiful music and draw upon the healing powers of singing that everyone needs, more than ever after the year we’ve just had.
