The Parliamentary Budget Office has costed Adam Bandt’s plan to extend Medicare to dental services at $77.6 billion over a decade.

The Greens will push the price tag for their recently announced economic and social welfare policies past $240 billion on Wednesday, with party leader Adam Bandt to unveil a policy expanding Medicare to cover dental services.

Greens leader Adam Bandt with Senator Janet Rice, Senator Lidia Thorpe, Kooyong candidate Piers Mitchem and Macnamara candidate Steph Hodgins-May on Sunday.Over a decade, it would cost $77.6 billion, with Mr Bandt to say the policy was a key plank of itsFunding for the dental expansion will come from previously announced policies to increase taxes on high-wealth Australians and corporations.

The Greens hold just one lower house seat, Mr Bandt’s seat of Melbourne, and has whittled its target list down to five: Ryan and Griffith in Queensland, Richmond in NSW, and Macnamara and Higgins in Victoria. The Greens also hope to pick up Senate seats in NSW, Queensland and South Australia while holding seats in the other states.

The minor party has also pledged $40 billion to renationalise the electricity sector, $19 billion to subsidise the wages of coal miners to exit the industry and $12 billion for domestic violence support services.

The measly cost of one submarine bungled contract per year. Great value.

I mean the LNP blew 600B on squat so meh

Does this take account of existing govt funding on public dental? There r existing programs. The overall figure should show the net cost to budget! AdamBandt

Greens desperate to be relevant promise to run the country into the ground with vague understanding of economy based on Google searches.

Josh the trickle down economist, wasted $40 Billion on companies that either made a profit or didn't need it with Jobkeeper. $7.6 Billion a year for dental, pittance, considering the health and economic benefits.

MalBJones So $7.7 billion a year? What a bargain when we have Morrison wasting $5.5 billion on submarines they decided not to buy.

Ooooh....FR fights back with a wet lettuce. Under LNP we have a TRILLION DOLLAR DEBT....ThisIsNotJournalism

So less than a couple of useless submarines... I'm in.

And?

Let’s have a referendum if we want Medicare to cover mental and dental or submarinesauspol

Sounds fair to me.

And it all benefits us! Much better than throwing money around to benefit Morrison’s mates. Bring on ICAC.

Good. Companies don’t need to make billions of profits every year. They can still make a big profit, just a bit less.

We could pay for that by stopping negative gearing - yes!

That will be money well spent 👍

northway_debbie Sounds good. Very good.

What are the cost of not doing something about dental care to the economy and while we're at it, cost the waste of those French subs plus the cost of the new American subs.

Of course we will need more dentists, more hygienists. Plenty of created employment right there.

Less than we currently pay to prop up fossil fuels.

Did they cost the cost of rotten teeth resulting in poor health outcome?

So all they would have to do is remove diesel fuel rebates. Checks out.

One THIRD the cost of our DUD submarines!! SO YEAH money well spent!! Medicare IS DEAD under the LNPCorruptionParty !!

So half a submarine for a whole decade of dental care? Neat

In other words, about half could be paid by getting back the misspent JobKeeper payments to companies.

At least it will get done, not like notional funded policies like Morrison announces.AFR,another arm under the Costello Liberal cheer squad.👎👎

Just repurpose the $ put aside in the budget for the continuing detention of REFUGEES more than cover this auspoI

davidbewart that is only $325/yr over 10 years for every man woman and child - a little more than mp's per diem for each day he stays and sleeps, possibly fornicates and boozes in Canberra

And the issue is They will pick that up by stopping rorts and taxing the rich, problem solved.

so put dental on medicare? I hope you dimwits costing this know that your oral health actually affects the rest of your body right.

davidbewart sounds fair

No billionaire has ever gone broke paying his share!! No billionaire has paid their share so it’s time!!

Excellent policy! And so much more beneficial to society than our cancelled French submarine contract

BETTER THAN 5.5 BILLION FOR NON EXISTENT SUBS😳

Well at least it will help people ….the cost of the submarines is $85 billion and that won’t help anyone even after the 20 yr wait since they will be obsolete

Sounds very fair actually

Bargain

Don’t just look at the cost! The super-profits tax is estimated to bring in more money than all of these measures cost. So we will be better off than we are now financially!

Nice - whose paying ? Or is it “free” like they want everything else to be.

So, a small fraction of the trillion dollar debt the current government have dragged us in to? Duly noted!🤬🐀

So what. Morrison just wasted 5.5 billion on French compensation. Great return on that investment.

At least Greens admit where they are funding it from, unlike Fin Review who employ idiots like ronmjm who think politicians need to know precise facts To quote Albert Einstein 'I don't burden my memory with such facts that can easily be found in a textbook' (or Google.

Pouring one out for the billionaires

That's like a quarter of the military spending we are doing over the next 20 years.. And as a certain journalist said recently on Insiders.. We couldn't defend against a penguin invasion. I would rather have dental thanks! auspol auspoll

Yep, and I'm thrilled with their plan to tax billionaires to pay for it. Finally, vision and leadership. Also loved seeing AFR 'journalist' get schooled. auspol AdamBandt

That’s costs the same as about 1/3 of those bulky old missiles Scott bought that China already know how to vaporise.

This is about the cost of negative gearing to the budget per year. Outrageous tax breaks for landlords or expanded Medicare to cover dental? Pretty obvious choice if you're not a sociopath (or a neoliberal newspaper)...

40B$ (45% of) jobkeeper wasted on companies who didnt need it as their revenue increased during Covid as per ATO filings,12B$ subsidy to fossil fuel industry & 500k+ lawyer fees to ministry-less cabinet ministers staff/mistress compensation not in old list. All rorts can fund it

Cool, so more cost effective than paying France $5 billion for nothing. 👍👍👍 AusPol2022

Bargain. How are we NOT doing this already?

Awesome, sounds like a great deal.

At least somebody covered well

Yep

$5.5B just for breaking a contract that ONE time like it was nothing. By comparison, $77.6B over 10y for the common good is a bargain.

Sounds good. Finally someone will make them pay taxes

I call that money well spent. Did they cost savings on physical and mental health care? Considering what LNPDisgrace gave to wealthy businesses and private schools under cover of jobkeeper…

Still better value than any submarine deal

How many Submarines is that?

You say this like it is a bad thing, but really what you don't like is all Australians having access to dental care rather than just the rich and that the rich don't want to pay for the poor's dental care through taxes

Media always looking at what it costs. What about what is saves in pain, suffering, antibiotics, hospital visits? It will do more good for more Australians than non existent future submarines and planes that don’t fly. A good, insightful policy - like mental health and Telehealth

$7b/ year. If we stop terminating contracts like the subs, we’ll have no problem affording this. And it helps Australians 😀

Lol is this the same people that f-cked up their own costing of one of the job-something-ears at 60 billion more than it actually cost? Cause if so, they probably should be asked if it was Frydenberg calculator they used?

Really,it aint alot when you work out how much money this Morrison Government has wasted.

Makes Labor look as economically rigorous as the Coalition. Go back to basket weaving, Adam.

He’s dreamin…

Im confused why ensuring people have access to quality dental care is a bad thing?

How good is exploiting Australia & Australians and paying no tax !!

Loved how Adam “Google it, mate” Bandt put another lazy, clickbait-driven “journalist” in his place. It was a golden moment 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

This directly benefits the public. Better than giving money to Harvey Norman.

Sounds great! Where do we sign up?
