Steve Hall’s winery, Rockcliffe, was decimated by China’s tariffs on Australian wine, but is hopeful he can replace it with growth in his own backyard of WA.

But Dr Hall says it would be “impossible” to revive its China business, even if the tariffs were dropped.“[But] we can never go back to China, it’s just never going to happen because first of all, the Chinese, all those people we used to sell to, they’ve bought from France and Chile, they had to keep running their businesses.

“Why is that? Because I don’t do the marketing correctly in Perth? I don’t know. There’s so many people who say they want to buy the wine. It’s weird that we have not done particularly well in Perth, so we’re changing the focus,” he said. Part of Rockcliffe’s Perth push involves marketing its high-end Nautica label beyond direct sales, and looking for more deals with restaurants and retailers, such as Liquor Barons, to compliment its existing arrangement with BWS stores. Hall, who previously worked at energy giants Woodside and BP, also plans to host more tasting and lunches with Perth “influencers” to build awareness.
