In WA’s south-west, two towns are moving away from their major industries and while residents of one town see a bright future, the other is in limbo.

The towns of Manjimup and Collie were built on the timber and coal industries respectively, but while those industries disappear, one town is righting itself while the other is "treading water".

But in the timber town of Manjimup, the state's surprise announcement to end native timber logging by 2024 sentFor years, funding has been pumped into Collie — a marginal seat — with the phasing out of coal considered inevitable. Manjimup timber saw owner Alan Treace said there was no compensation available for him, despite his business being intrinsically entwined with the timber industry.Jarrah logging will end under the new ban, except in circumstances such as clearing land for mining.

What happens to a species when it’s habitat ends. We’ve had a century to get plantation timber cranking. Get on with it.

If you work in an office and the industry goes bust, there are no rescue packages from the government. Why do these guys expect everyone else to pick up the slack?

Please do an in depth analysis of THE REST OF US who have retrained and relocated all over this vast country when our jobs became redundant. This is not new….welcome to the human race fellas! Did you leave any trees and species viable after your “work”?

Sadly, the town does, but the people who killed their industry open up a bottle of Moët to celebrate how they saved the planet …. Again.

The world moves on but some towns don't

They diversify and seek new opportunities..it is what it is.. nothing lasts forever

Industries come and go all the time. You still going to a video store? Still visiting the local blacksmith? Learn to adapt or go extinct. That is the literal nature of the world

Never put all your eggs in one basket

Sadly this happens all over remote country areas and they become ghost towns. If you have no future there, cut your losses and start again. Harsh but it's the reality of the situation. ie. Witenoom WA.

You learn never to rely on a town with no plan B

Sorry but these 2 look like the character in Stranger things season 4. Hop and his Russian friend. Back to the article, many towns have had big changes over the years. They will cope.
