Following a wet season deluge in the Northern Territory, a significant amount of mining-affected wastewater was pumped into a river in a national park, causing the potential for environmental harm.

The action was in contravention of the mine's waste discharge licence and led to the company pleading guilty to four offences in September. He noted the company had taken practical steps to make amends since the incident, including taking disciplinary action and ensuring staff were now aware of water discharge procedures.

That's lunch money for them.

Oh wait $340,000 is a lot of money to company making billions.

But it's just what mining companies do. It's cheap disposal.

Is that it? I think at least 3 more 0s need to be added to the end of that amount and lose their right to mine resources. Also pay for national advertising on all media platforms about the damage they have caused. Ruin the environment, well your business name gets ruined too 😡

Fine was probably cheaper than disposal fees. Should be charged $340,000 for every day it isn't cleaned up.

$340k 😂😂😂 And people complain about green tape. Our environmental laws are a joke

Should have been millions in fines that amount is a pittance.

Just pocket money to them.

How did this happen? Nathan River Resources (NRR) runs the Roper Bar iron ore mine, which is situated within the Limmen National Park, about 600 kilometres south-east of Darwin.

michaelaxe Classic and unfortunately worth it from a business standpoint

Shut them down. They have been nothing but trouble since they opened up.

“Nathan River Resources (NRR) runs the Roper Bar iron ore mine, which is situated within the Limmen National Park, about 600 kilometres south-east of Darwin.” How did an iron ore mine come to be situated within a national park? Who allowed this and why?

Good to see, but Co's like this should be fined multiple millions otherwise there is zero incentive to do the right thing. Do wrong, plead guilty and pay out a little petty cash - all fixed!!

Should be shut down and banned from mining

So instead of solving the problem, they took some money and pissed on it?

They probably figure that is a bargain

Compare to the profit they earn, the fine is nothing yet the damage of polluted water to the environment is huge.

They’d be fined more if their employees rode E-scooters in the NP

What a joke. Their business should be shut down. This was a deliberate and calculated action.

I hope that we don't heavily fine these companies. They are the life blood of Australia.

300k lol is that it?

So... A slap on the wrist then.
