Acting Public Protector Advocate Kholeka Gcaleka says there is a lack of political will to implement governance reforms in South Africa.

at a State Capacity conference in Durban which looks at building a capable public service that can implement government policies.

Gcaleka says President Cyril Ramaphosa refers regularly to Auditor General findings but does not give an update on corrective steps that have been taken. Earlier, KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Nomusa Dube-Ncube, deliverring the keynote address, told the conference there was a shortage of capacity across all spheres of government, leading to the uneven implementation of policies.

Delegates have heard that in order for a democracy to work, all institutions of government must function effectively. They’ve also been told that a failure in this regard, may result in citizens believing that democracy is not working and they will likely revolt.
