The Big Cat Public Safety Act was passed by the Senate this week and is soon expected to become law. The landmark U.S. legislation bans cub petting, tiger selfies, and breeding big cats as pets

made clear, have been a major source of revenue. But animal welfare advocates have sharply criticized business owners for, among other things, speed-breeding cubs and“It’s common practice to use cubs for photo-ops until they are too large to hold,” says Sara Amundson, president of the Humane Society Legislative Fund. “They are then dumped or sold, which simply perpetuates the cycle,” she says, adding that unwanted cats often languish in substandard facilities or even are killed.

Some discarded animals may be smuggled into the black market for their body parts, perpetuating demand for products such as tiger bone wine and medicinal paste that are a major threat to wild tigers, says Leigh Henry, director of wildlife policy at the World Wildlife Fund. The items are sought in China and elsewhere. “Given the lack of regulation, it would be easy for those tigers to filter into the illegal tiger trade,” she says.

The thousands of captive tigers in the U.S. have been a source of contention during international discussions about shutting down tiger farms in , Henry says. Countries have asked why the U.S. hasn’t ended its own industry. Passage of the new bill, she says, “takes away that deflection point, and we can hopefully make progress.”have been forced to surrender their animals because of violations of the Animal Welfare Act, decreasing the number of well-known cub-petting offerings. Now, only two U.S. exhibitors advertise cub petting for selfies, according to the Humane Society, although more may offer them without publicly promoting them.

Amundson urges any big cat owners who don't want to keep their animals after the bill becomes law to place them in humane sanctuaries accredited by theThe National Geographic Society supports Wildlife Watch, our investigative reporting project focused on wildlife crime and exploitation. Read

Bring back to their native

Zoos or euthanasia for the older cats. So sad.

More tigers exist in captivity than in the wild so......let's kills off that population and drive them into complete extinction. Seems smart.

Will you PLEASE not EVER use that photographer that photoshoots for Balenciaga to be your photographer! I WILL CANCEL AND GET OTHER TOO! GabrieleGalimba

Theyre gonna be all killed

Seriously are they afraid that the Tigers are going to sue for control of their images! It a good way to make a little cash for Zoos' and the maintaining the health of the animals! Money does not grow on trees! the cookie jar is almost empty so i guess long term it a bullet!

Finally!!!

Best would be to regularize/register the existing ones who already live in houses with humans and stop new ones.

It’s about time!

This is a great news coming from a place where more tigers are there in captivity than the entire wild tigers in the world (across the species).

I hope so

It's about time!

It means Carole wins 😂😂😂🤷‍♀️

“Freedom”

Free joe exotic!!!

Most of these responses are idiotic. The private zoos were helping to propagate the species. Outlawing commercialization will bring the species that much closer to extinction. Commercialization saved the buffalo.

Theses beautiful and majestic creatures need to be rescued and rehabilitated and set loose in there proper habitats. .

Volunteered at a wildlife sanctuary that had 13 tigers while I was there, all bred in captivity. We took excellent care of them but it was so sad as their cages were small. Most were former “pets” whose owners could no longer care for them as they grew.

Good 👍! It's about time ⌚⏱️🕰️⏰⏲️! Rather/better late than never!

Great! As long as the law allows for every possible opportunity for big cats to have sanctuary! Don't cookie cutter it.

About time

It should mean that they be turned over to Sanctuaries in their native Countries at the owners expense.

Its quite bizarre that a private citizen can own a wild animal so dangerous with little to no regulation.

It simply means freedom to the poor little cats. Their place is in the jungle not human homes or circuses.

Lol. That is so pathetic. Silly ass virtue signaling from leftists. The problem is Africans killing precious Tigers and other endangered species. Not white tourists taking selfies with zoo animals.

set them back in their homes....

Wonderful news. Animal slavery needs to stop for good. 🦒🐒🦍🦓🐆🐘🦏🦛🦧🦣🐫🐪🐅

No more Tiger Kings...hahaha can't believe I saw that.

NatGeo oh my goodness, so cute. adorable. jaw dropping cute.

NatGeo Don't we have bigger issues to worry about? why don't you cover the collusion of the Democrats, FBI, and Twitter officials censorship of the Hunter Biden laptop during and election year?! Oooh yeah that would be reporting actual news the people need to know.

NatGeo Why not make crossing the border illegal too while we do this bulls$

NatGeo Good!

NatGeo How about covering the REAL NEWS ABC? Twitter dropped yet another bombshell last evening and nothing but crickets over here. Wonder why that is? 🤔 🤔🤔🤔🤔😏

NatGeo How’s this not already illegal?

NatGeo Where can you do tiger selfies in this country without a barrier?

NatGeo Now do TwitterFiles you co-conspirators

NatGeo Good. Hoping this will apply to all potentially harmful exotic pets since they need their normal, not human intrusion.

NatGeo It seems perfect to me, tiger cubs are not stuffed animals

NatGeo Nxt trophyhunting

OrbPlanet Hallelujah!

Thank you

‘Bout time

Why the Fuck do they try to Control everything and everybody how does that even come up I’m discussions all these problems in the World they worried about u taking a photo or petting a Tiger

Great news!!

🙌🏼👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Cute cats:)

If you leave emotional thoughts aside, and focus on the data, you will realize that the animals that are furthest away from extinction are precisely the domesticated animals.

Great news, Kool Kats and Kittens! 🐯

Adorable!

Tiger King is just awful 😢

This received unanimous consent in the Senate. Now on to President Biden's desk & I'm so sure he'll sign it! I'm rather surprised but glad that it passed the entire Senate. I'm thankful for wild kitties' sakes.

What a shame. F****** yersel again?

Excellent.

Finally. I wish the whole world would do the same.

I guess if you want to those cats to go extinct, that’s the way to go. How many of you know that it is the government that killed more of those cats than the people commercializing them?

Tigers are so majestic!

Great news! 👍
