Photo: Komatipoort Business ForumAn IT glitch that caused widespread congestion and delays for cargo transporters at SA's land borders has been resolved, but the country's tax authority and other freight stakeholders are busy still working to clear backlogs at the Lebombo post connecting the N4 to Maputo.
Barbara Mommen, a corridor consultant for the South African Association of Freight Forwarders , told News24 on Wednesday afternoon that the problems began on Sunday night at all the country's land borders on the South African side after the South African Revenue Service suffered an IT system malfunction, which delayed the electronic clearance of vehicles going through the borders.
Temporary measures that were used in the interim included processing manifest numbers and transport documentation manually, as well as other electronic interim measures to process vehicles.A deep dive into the big business story of the week, as well as expert analysis of markets and trends.
The joint statement, of which Mommen is a signatory, said all the stakeholders were"working collaboratively and with urgency to manage the challenges currently being experienced and to restore border processing to normal as soon as possible". They called on all affected"transporters and truck drivers" to assist with the effort and exercise"patience and restraint", as well as to"refrain from acting in a manner not conducive to maintaining the organised flow of traffic to and through our borders".It also advised trucks without a"proceed to border" notification status not to approach the border and"not to park at the border while awaiting clearance documents".
