A critical deal to secure spare parts for Transnet locomotives from a Chinese manufacturer is now out of the state-owned entity's hands. While the SOE has signed, as far as the commercial terms of the deal are concerned, the matter is"no longer in Transnet's control", Transnet Freight Rail CEO Sizakele Mzimela said on Tuesday.
Speaking at the Coal and Energy Transition Day in Johannesburg, Mzimela outlined how, in terms of the deal on the table, the procurement of required spares from the manufacturer – the state-owned China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation – would bring back 159 locomotives into service within six months. It would also see CRRC deliver 99 outstanding new locomotives.Get 14 days free to read all our investigative and in-depth journalism. Thereafter you will be billed R75 per month.
