Work to rebuild Harrisburg’s Broad Street Market is facing a major setback as the city council voted 5-2 to reject the construction manager who was set to do the project.

Councilmembers, including Danielle Bowers and Jocelyn Rawls, cited 'equity issues' in the selection process for their justification for the rejection of Alexander Building Construction. The council also said that the companies chosen should be a better representation of the diversity of the city.“The restoration of the Brick Building of the Broad Street Market is crucial to council, to the administration, and to our community.

In a statement, she said the company was chosen because it 'got the highest marks of an independent scoring system that has awarded public projects for decades.'Williams also called the decision 'reckless', and added that 'it means vendors will have to wait even longer to get back into their permanent home' and 'city residents will watch the one-year anniversary of the fire come and go without any work being done.
