'It's not an expense, it's an investment': Oxfam Canada demands universal childcare cdnpoli

“The average Ontario family spends nearly a quarter of their family income on child care, or just over two-thirds of the main caregiving parent’s potential income,” the report states.

“We’re talking about a system where every single family in Canada, no matter where you live or what you earn, could have a spot in a quality daycare,” Lauren Ravin, director of policy and campaigns for Oxfam Canada, told CTV’s Your Morning. “It’s not an expense, it’s an investment in the future of Canada, it’s an investment in our economy,” Ravin said.

The OECD, ILO, IMF and World Bank have described Canada’s lack of accessible and affordable child care services as “one of the highest hurdles for women to participate in the labour force” and have criticized Canada’s low investment in early learning and child care, the report said.

Why aren’t they encouraging birth control and after two kids mandatory sterilization. Worked for me. I’ve never had to beg for a hand out.

Its socialism

Raising a child costs money. People should have a plan BEFORE having kids..having taxpayers pay for your childcare is not a plan. Parents already get 1 year maternity leave and full day kindergarten. Don’t see why taxpayers should be required to pick up more of the cost?

It's much cheaper in Quebec only because they impose high taxes to subsidize it.

if you want to invest in childcare, pay the mothers to stay home.
