U.S. stocks ended slightly lower on Wednesday amid a continuing cloud of uncertainty over the U.S.'s trade ties with China. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.20% fell 0.2% to finish near 2,880. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.17% shed 44 points, or 0.2%, to end around 26,005, based on preliminary numbers. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.38% was down 0.4% to end around 7,793.

Investors also kept an eye on a soft reading of consumer prices data, which showed inflation rose by a muted 0.1% in May. Shares of Tesla TSLA, -3.61% slumped 3.7% after Elon Musk, the chief executive of the electric car maker, said the company was not suffering from demand and production issues. Futures for U.S. crude CLN19, -4.05% fell 4% to settle at $51.14 a barrel, weighing on energy stocks.
