The combined economy of Africa’s 54 countries is smaller than that of France

ago Patrick Bitature, a Ugandan tycoon, took his mobile-phone business to Nigeria. At first the cash was piling up so fast that it would not fit in the safe. But he found the business culture more cut-throat and less trusting than back home. Money started going missing. Eventually he retreated to the east African markets he knows best. “I was going to go to every country in Africa at the time,” he recalls, smiling at his naivety. “I was lucky not to lose my shirt.

Leading African businesses are stitching the region together, making it easier for others to follow suit. Banks serve their corporate clients across multiple countries. Business leaders flit between megacities aboard Ethiopian Airlines, which flies to 36 African states. Intra-continental expansion is a response to two challenges. The first is finding customers. . As they grow richer, individuals or businesses switch from informal purveyors to formal markets where big firms operate. But these customers are concentrated in pockets across a vast land mass.

Tell us something new!

Blatancy! How can the richest continent with minerals have an economy smaller than that of France? So you steal our minerals and call us poor?

So what? Must one hail any thief noble..?

One word. Colonization.

Because European/ British companies like Glencore extract profit from countries in Africa..more or less for free.

Wow. As an African, that's not good news. The entire continent's economy? We need to improve a lot of things for economic growth

This is ridiculous!! How do you measure our African economy which is still unexploited like vast natural resources!!?

France imports raw materials from Africa and sells them Renault and Citreon. France drills oil from Africa and sells them Total etc refined petrol. Never mind getting repatriation s.

We need One Africa. A United States of Africa. Let the giant arise. We have so much wealth. Abundant sunshine. Geothermal energy. Hydroelectric potential. Combined. One currency. Power in unity. We must reverse Berlin 1884. Africa Arise. Africa will. Africa can

Wow

Really!!!?

France and the other colonial powers stole their wealth and retarded their development. Africans must completely remove European powers from their soil in order to truly progress.

And? Let’s see if China can make something of them

TuomasTumi

Colonial banking system is keeping Africa artificially poor and is totally arcane in its application and protection by arms!!

No surprise when the wealth is all in Swiss bank accounts, accessible to the politicians who govern the African nations.

Tell me something I don't know...the top 1% of earners....Zzzzz

BBoason With which country's companies leading between South Africa and Nigeria?

Which is great...keep it within the continent

In other news: China is expanding across the African continent.

Regional play

Lol

Regulators in African countries are not helping matters. They see everything as political which makes no sense

Africapitalism is a possible answer/solution. United we stand! TonyElumeluFDN Heirs_Holdings TonyOElumelu IfeyinwaUgo SomaKudi

Africapitalism is a wake up call for African entrepreneurs, businesses, & governments to rise up to the challenge & contribute to the development of the continent. Pitching one African country against the other, as the writer did, is rather sad and disingenuous. Africapitalism

..and they're still eying Us (Afika), what a greedy Franz!! I pray 1day den go b in our Situation n we go be in their position

Africa receive sense, stop stealing our common wealth and storing it abroad to develop their economy!!

Its funny how western media bends over backwards to ignore Europe's brutal past of imperialism and colonialism which led to state sanctioned theft in which africa is still recovering from. France has imposed neo colonial policies thats why their economy is rich

Rethinking Economics for Africa makes sense now

France is actually a known thief of African resources.

Necessary

And yet France is still greedy enough to loot the Francophone countries 🤔

raufaregbesola Have they stop stealing from Africa?

The Fiat Neconomist '' Even when i'm lying ...i'm telling the truth ' 💂!

raufaregbesola But that's because France has stolen and continues to steal the resources of Francophone African countries. Also harbours looted funds stashed there by African leaders.

raufaregbesola What do you expect from colonial thief country who raped Africa.

Nominal gdp. Makes little sense here especially since France controls the monetary policy of 1/4 of them.

Africa population is same as India and same GDP as India only size of Africa is large

Interesting comparison with France, given that France in particular still retains colonial influence by proxy through private companies. Holdings of Vincent Bolloré and Hubert Fabri come to mind...

But the population is sure 10 times more !

The title does not make sense, France is a colony of Africa and pays for its wellfare. Title should be 'France represents half of the combined economy of Africa' fakenews grandremplacement

It also means that the combined economy of these 54 African countries is smaller than India
