Renee Welsh wasn't looking to sell Booking Boss, the tourism startup she co-founded with her husband Andy Welsh, when international giant Helix Leisure came knocking.
"We weren't just going to sell our business to just anyone. It was quite an emotional decision for us," Welsh says on the sidelines of the"We were raising another round of funding and we had expanded from institutional investors and venture capitalists out to strategic investment. We were introduced to Helix Leisure as a result of that intent as they were going through the due diligence they approached and said we would prefer to acquire you.
"We have done a lot of work in combining the two [businesses] and ensuring that the business is efficient and acts and works like a startup in some ways to ignite some innovation and transformation in the sector," she says. "The biggest challenge I had was when Andy and I walked into a room they would direct questions to him or assume he is the CEO," Welsh says. "I still experience that to some extent in some meetings even when people know you are the CEO and they direct questions to the team but I just interject and answer the question."
