Opposition leader Anthony Albanese has declared withdrawing Australia’s coal exports from the market could lead to an increase in global emissions. Mr Albanese backed Australia’s coal industry ahead of a tour of Queensland this week. The Labor leader said it wasn’t worth withdrawing Australia’s coal from the market in order to take tougher action on climate change.
“If we were to stop exporting coal tomorrow then that would just lead to displacement with more coal being bought from other places around the world,” he told 2GB Radio. Mr Albanese went on to say withdrawing Australia’s coal could even push global emissions higher “because much of our coal is better quality than is available from the alternative”. Resources Minister Matt Canavan challenged the Opposition leader to declare his support for the construction of the Adani coal mine in Queensland.
