CHILDCARE INNOVATORS: 5 startups reviving the early education industry by addressing preschool shortages, taking learning virtual, and helping providers better run their businesses

Founded in Seattle earlier this year, LegUp helps childcare providers stay in business and operate more profitably by locating children to fill their open seats. As a corollary, parents searching for open spots find available inventory they might not have otherwise known about through the company's service.

Eggert germinated the idea while pregnant with her second child, realizing she was already behind in finding childcare at three weeks along due to the imbalance between supply and demand. Having just left a startup, Eggert did a deep dive on the category, researching the pain points of providers, and was startled to learn how little childcare workers earn.

"COVID was a big wake-up for everybody when it comes to childcare," she said. "We were very lucky that we had already worked with so many providers to build a solution that could really work for them and take so much off of their plates that we could really roll out and start working pretty quickly."

"We want to grow as quickly as possible, but we want to grow intentionally," Eggert said. "Our goal is to make sure that what we're building actually really works for our providers. We've spent a lot of time getting to know them and getting to know what their needs are, and because we've built this trust, we want to keep their trust."Phil Plante, cofounder of It's Circle Time.

"We're trying to focus on replicating the preschool program into this virtual classroom, so I do meet and greets with all of the parents so that they get that whole meet-the-teacher experience," Kiang said. "I try to keep all of the classes fairly small, so that they get a great experience — there's not a lot of echoing and they're not talking over one another. We also offer extracurricular activities like art, yoga, science, cooking classes, to draw them in as well.
