Plazas at San Francisco's 24th Street BART station in the Mission District were shut down with fencing Wednesday.

24th Street BART station in the Mission District were shut down with fencing Wednesday as part of an effort to stop the sale of stolen goods in the city and encourage permitted street vending, officials said.BART said the the southwest plaza and the northeast plaza areas"have been an area of concern for city officials, members of the public, and our riders." On any given day, dozens of people convene here to sell everything from shampoo to shoes.

The plazas will be closed for 60 days at the request of Supervisor Hillary Ronen, whose District 9 includes the Mission District. "While it is never my desire to close public space the situation at 24th & Mission BART plaza has become untenable & is causing problems for the whole neighborhood," Ronen."It infuriates me to see a once beautiful & vibrant community space overrun by open-air drug markets & vendors selling stolen goods."

Ronen called the fence a temporary solution while San Francisco Public Works sets up a vendor permit application process and trains more street inspectors as part of a new law to crack down on people stealing stolen goods. Ronen said that once the system is up and running,"Public Works can begin confiscating goods from unpermitted vendors."
