The African National Congress (ANC) is set to announce the names of the newly elected additional members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) on Wednesday.

Voting for the 80 additional members took place over a course of two days. The results were initially scheduled to be released on Tuesday evening. However, counting continued beyond midnight with over 200 candidates having made it to the ballot.

The announcement comes after the party already adjourned the 55th National Conference. This, while some items will only be completed next year. The incoming NEC already has tasks before it – such as deciding on the appropriate action in dealing with the party Members of Parliament who voted in favour of Section 89 independent panel report in the National Assembly.

Meanwhile, the party has deferred the adoption of commission reports to January next year. This is after the number of delegates decreased substantially and prevented the conference from adopting the reports which require a two-thirds majority to be passed. The commissions are a critical aspect of the ruling party’s conferences as they guide the work of government and inform the policies that will affect South Africans.
