Minister says Act doesn't infringe First Nations' treaty rights. skpoli

During her remarks, Eyre insisted the Act is not just a case of “fed-bashing for kicks,” but an important tool for protecting Saskatchewan’s economy in the face of federal encroachment on provincial jurisdiction. She said federal policies like new clean fuel regulations and the carbon tax disproportionately hurt Western Canada and said the province is doing no more than Quebec already has when it comes to asserting itself.

The Sask. First Act has also drawn opposition from Indigenous representatives. The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations ha Eyre said Thursday that she had a “very cordial” meeting this week with FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron and other officials, and that she’d worked to clarify the government’s intent with the Act. She noted that language in the Act referring to the province’s “exclusive jurisdiction” over natural resources simply echoes section 92A of the constitution.
