Walgreens is caught in a legal tug-of-war over abortion pills. But the company is not entirely to blame. (via MaddowBlog)

Since it merged with New York's Duane Reade more than a decade ago, Walgreens has been my family's go-to for Halloween candy, vacation sunscreen, trashy magazines, and most importantly, our prescription medication. And while it may be a massive national chain, Walgreens feels decidedly local thanks to our pharmacist, who’s been in my life for nearly 15 years.

But now, Walgreens is the latest casualty — or coward, depending on who you ask — in a showdown between anti-abortion states and the federal Food and Drug Administration, which approved the key drug used in medication abortion more than 20 years ago. And as a result, Walgreens is caught in a vise of sorts that its leadership,, neither wanted nor expected. Even worse, its legal and business dilemma potentially could have been avoided.

Walgreens is caught in a vise of sorts that its leadership, often heralded for its diversity and innovation, neither wanted nor expected.so that retail pharmacies could sell mifepristone, one of two drugs that comprise abortion pills, as long as it completed a certification process. Within days, Walgreens and CVS, the nation's two largest retail pharmacies, pledged they would participate.

it was “working through the registration and training of its pharmacists to dispense mifepristone consistent with federal and state law.”

'Walgreen's is a private company...' (You know the rest.)

SHAME !

Democrats are the party of murdering sociopaths…..

This story line keeps making the rounds. What about them standing behind their workers who refuse to sell contraception to the public because of their faith? That’s why I’m not planning on doing business there. This action just solidifies my decision.

Took my prescription out and will not go back

I transferred my prescriptions from CVS to Walgreens because they have the guts to stand up to the baby killers.

This is a really fallacious way of thinking. Walgreens isn't caught between a rock and a hard place. They're a retail outlet. Either they sell stuff, or they don't. Why Walgreens would make any move before a regulator tells them otherwise is the 'self-inflicted' problem.

Until they get it figured out, I'm just going to avoid Walgreens like the plague.

I will never shop there again. Nice going, Walgreens!!

MSNBC reports instigating battlegrounds once again, saying the war over abortion as their reports seem to side with killing an innocent human is deemed legal as a form of birth control and that the Pharmacy who are follow govern regulations are wrong.

They have a choice and they made it.

Businesses need to make a choice. At least they have one.

The Taliban GOP impinging on all areas of American life The future for women in America is bleak

Walgreens chose its side and is now dealing with the consequences.

Futhermore, I suspect Walgreens has gotten advance notice that Kaczmarek (Tx Judge) is going to hose Mifeprisone nationwide. Walgreens was the first to allow pharmacists to refuse to fill the 'morning after' prescriptions due to their religious beliefs. Well, get a different job.

They want to be America's Pharmacy - they have an obligation to fill the prescriptions no matter if they're afraid of the republicans (probably afraid of republicans not supporting their requests). Their duty to the patient is to supply to prescripted meds...period.

BS. They can still burn.

Yes they are to blame. They made the decision

Stand strong Christian Knights!

I’ll never shop there again

Let me guess MSDNC says it’s Republicans fault. Who could’ve guessed coming from this clearly unbiased new network 😂
