An investigation has uncovered the involvement of Brazilian cotton producers, SLC Agrícola and Groupo Horita, in land grabbing and deforestation. The cotton produced by these companies has been traced to fast-fashion companies through Asian suppliers. The investigation tracked the cotton supply chain and traced garments from the suppliers to retailers in the U.S. and Europe. H&M, one of the retailers involved, has expressed concern and is cooperating with the investigation.

Label coming from two producers, SLC Agrícola and Groupo Horita, which are under investigation by both federal and state agencies in Brazil for land grabbing and deforestation. Both groups have been hit with a number of fines for environmental infractions and illegal land clearing since 2008. Earthsight’s year-long investigation into the cotton supply chain showed that Brazilian cotton produced by SLC Agrícola and Groupo Horita worked its way to the fast-fashion companies via Asian suppliers.
