The lawyer who rose to fame representing the porn star in her legal battles over an affair with US President Donald Trump is charged with defrauding the adult actress of $436,000.

Cohen pleaded guilty to violating campaign finance lawsIn announcing the new charges, prosecutors said Mr Avenatti sent a"fraudulent and unauthorised letter" to Ms Daniels' literary agent, instructing the agent to send payments not to Ms Daniels but to a bank account he controlled.

"Far from zealously representing his client, [Mr] Avenatti, as alleged, instead engaged in outright deception and theft, victimising rather than advocating for his client," Manhattan US Attorney-Geoffrey Berman said in a statement.Mr Avenatti"blatantly lied" and stole to maintain his"extravagant lifestyle", Mr Berman said.

"When is the publisher going to cough up my money?," she asked Mr Avenatti in early December, according to the indictment.
