A sewer in Queensland said she relished the opportunity to help out the stricken south after the care her community had been shown in times of trouble One animal rescue group said its members have been working 18-hour days in an effort to keep up with an"explosion" of interest The fires are estimated to have killed more than one billion animals so far this season, and wildlife hospitals and carers have been inundated with the injured.

A sewing bee organised by Michelle Juhas in the rural town of Wangan, near Innisfail, in far north Queensland, drew more than 50 people this week."I expected maybe 10 people would be interested but there's quite a lot more here today.
