It is impossible to evaluate these monuments without considering the context of why they were created in the first place. Many of them were erected as part of the push to enshrine a dishonest, prettied-up version of the Confederacy—they weren’t a testament to our history, but a distortion of it.
The bases are a harder case, since their names have themselves entered the American military tradition and places like Fort Bragg and Fort Benning are better known than their namesakes, the Confederate generals Braxton Bragg and Henry Benning. But as the source of their names becomes more widely known, it’s going to be harder to ask African American soldiers willing to sacrifice life and limb for their country to look past them.
The apotheosis of Lee was an element of a Lost Cause mythology that maintained that the Civil War wasn’t truly about slavery, only Southern states defending their legitimate prerogatives. This interpretation became very influential; it was also completely false.
Robert E. Lee accepted the outcome and urged everyone to respect the civilian authorities. It's no wonder liberals hate him!
They are an affront to ALL people. M as my were erected in the 20th century to demonstrate that while the War was over the 'war' was still very much on. The Civil War was LOST by the South. There is no other way to say it. It's time we all grow up!

We are a country of mixed heritages, and many of these monuments are part of southern heritage. They’re just statues. I bet nobody at Politico feels one iota of guilt for using iPhones, when those are made by slave labor in the Uygher Muslim prison camps.
Look at it this way. The allies beat the Germans so any statues of Hitler came tumbling down. The South lost to the North. They got off easy no one executed. We will now take our revenge with their statues. Bring em down now

From early colonization through the revolution and US government up to the Civil War, the South held political power. The North was the revolution, including the moral issue to end slavery. Northern textile mills needed Southern cotton, too.
