Leaked audio reveals Google CEO Sundar Pichai saying he plans to expand 'hub' offices for a more flexible working future, but still sees most jobs tied to an office

Now, as Google intends "reinvent the future" with a new hybrid model, it wants to trial it first. During the all-hands last week, Pichai told employees that Google had teams "gearing up to run pilots" of the new model, but stopped short of detailing what those pilots will exactly look like, or when they might begin.

"The way we would do it is, and I think teams are already working on gearing up to run pilots, and obviously we need the right conditions for us to get into that pilot stage, but, you know, there is a team that is designing this, planning pilots, thinking through our tooling and all that will be required... thinking about the future of our work, building the right tooling, right policies, etc. The physical space where we need to reconfigure so we can pull in people into on-sites.

"I know there's a lot of ambiguity," said Pichai. "This is why we made the decision to give work from home till July, mid of next year, so that people can have some certainty in a time of ambiguity. "And we'll continue looking for ways to do that. But experimenting and learning as we go is going to be important here because we have to get it right, and we have to make sure the strengths of our company transfers into the new model, and you know, we can be productive and happy as a community while we do all that. So I'm thinking about it a lot."

Later, Pichai was asked whether employees who left the Bay Area during the pandemic would be forced to return when offices reopen. The CEO effectively dodged the question without a definitive answer, according to one employee who was present.Your morning cheat sheet to get you caught up on what you need to know in tech.
