A Bill Gates-led climate venture fund just raised another $1 billion. Here's the tech it's eyeing.

Breakthrough Energy Ventures, a VC firm led by Bill Gates, just announced that it raised a second $1 billion fund for climate tech.

BEV II could make its initial investments within the first three months of the year and will likely back 40 to 50 startups, the firm said in a statement. BEV's first fund was backed by several powerful investors including Jeff Bezos, Richard Branson, and Michael Bloomberg, which have given the firm no shortage of notoriety. Most of the original investors joined the second fund, along with a few new ones, BEV said. BEV declined to name the investors. "We will only invest in technologies with the potential, at scale, to reduce greenhouse gases by at least half a gigaton every year, about 1 percent of projected 2050 global emissions," the firm says on its website.
