Facebook’s decision to ban Australians from sharing news stories is an “unacceptable bullying tactic”, one the most senior Democrats in the US Senate says| KnottMatthew

“We have seen this again and again and it’s an unacceptable bullying tactic that only underscores concerns with their market dominance.”

Earlier this month he introduced legislation that would overhaul internet regulations by making social media companies legally liable for harassment, scamming and hate speech posted on their platforms., one of the biggest-selling newspapers in the US, devoted its entire front page to Facebook’s Australia news ban on Friday, US time.

“Threatening to bring an entire country to its knees to agree to Facebook’s terms is the ultimate admission of monopoly power.” Warner is one of several senators who have proposed amendments to Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act - a law that gives social media companies legal immunity for content posted on their platforms.

KnottMatthew SMH - if you didn't want links to your articles appearing on Facebook, have you ever considered maybe not posting them there yourself? This whole thing where you & other media sites post links to your articles on Facebook, & then demand Facebook pay you for doing so, is insane.

911CORLEBRA777 KnottMatthew I can’t stand Facebook and I hate being on their side over this

911CORLEBRA777 KnottMatthew Wrong. 1. The Australian govt signalled they would be enacting legislation. 2. Facebook is complying. That is literally all that has happened. FB doesn’t want to pay for media content so they aren’t platforming it. FFS just go direct to the news sites. This isn’t an issue.

KnottMatthew We're all having a great time, aren't we, of bashing the big bad tech companies, whining 'so evil!'. So I'd like to see FB & Google withdraw all their free services for just 1 day: FB, Insta, GMail, Maps, YouTube, Drive, Photos, Android etc. etc. & watch the country melt down..

KnottMatthew No worries mate. We don’t give a toss.

KnottMatthew “unacceptable bullying tactic” What a load of Bullus shittus.... Explain that to musicians and bands who don't get paid for sharing their links!! They only get paid when people listen or buy their stuff, what makes you so special ?

KnottMatthew The US Government under the Monopoly Laws, break up Facebook, and sell of various sections.

KnottMatthew This bloke doesn’t understand that the whole objective of the legislation was to stop Facebook sharing news content He should read the legislation before making a jackass of himself

KnottMatthew BS it's Facebooks choice however an easy fix is Facebook pays for our crappy MSM opinionfest 'news' however Facebook also charges MSM to create a page on it's platform and a small fee for every click to the story

KnottMatthew The ABC can't even go to Gab

KnottMatthew Not sure how it is bullying. I believe they need 2 pay their share of tax in Australia what laws r in place to govern them? This was a play by the Morrison Govt on behalf of Murdoch & 9 who’s advertising income is eroding 2 get a share of FB income. They lost. Now backpedaling.

KnottMatthew Where are you now JoshFrydenberg

KnottMatthew We Australians are a resilient bunch of people. We will seek out new means to get our news.

KnottMatthew This is amazing

KnottMatthew Try this ... Cops encircling and ejecting a Federally recognised journalist from a news conference on the orders of Dan Andrew's press secretary.

KnottMatthew Snowflakes, harden up, you brought this on yourselves

KnottMatthew I like my lists on Twitter. 😉

KnottMatthew Facebook only provides the portal with which these media outlets use to share their news. The media outlets create the page, FB is not publishing the material, the media outlets are and their readers are sharing it.

KnottMatthew But the two biggest media entities in Australia getting the government to pass legislation forcing Facebook to give them money and data ISN'T abusing market power?!?

KnottMatthew Unlike the government and Murdoch bullying them into paying? The government gave them an ultimatum.

KnottMatthew Hang on... You lot accused Facebook of stealing your content for profit. Facebook blocks you or anyone else from “stealing” your content and now you’re accusing them of bullying? Me thinks the lady doth protest too much.

KnottMatthew Ha! Still crying over the loss of your FREE promotion? We the people, think it's great. You're rabid manipulation via promoted dog whistles is brought to a sudden and well overdue end. Well done Facebook.

KnottMatthew Nope. If I provide you with a free service which you exploit to reach your audience you don’t get to turn around and demand that I pay you for it. That’s crazy.

KnottMatthew If only Australian journalists would report what is actually going on.

KnottMatthew How about Murdoch and his bullying tactics

KnottMatthew the news companies choose to post there, its not like FB steals news from their site to post, FB doesnt want to pay them so chose to get rid of them

KnottMatthew Australians need to get a life

KnottMatthew Who cares a toss what he thinks
