Business activity in Malaysia plunged in first half of 2021 amid lockdowns, survey finds

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 1 — Business activity slowed down markedly in the first half of 2021 as the tightening of Covid-19 lockdowns put further strains on the manufacturing sector, according to a biannual industry survey.

Except for cost of production, all the other current and forward-looking indicators posted lower readings compared with H2 2020, signalling that H1 2021 had been a very challenging period for manufacturers.Business activity for H2 2021 is expected to remain as slow as in the first six months of the year.

Soh said due to the restrictions, 44 per cent respondents opined that their businesses could only be sustained for one to six months.
