Industry insiders and experts seem to agree that Will Smith should not have his Oscar revoked for hitting Chris Rock, but little else seems certain.

“I don’t think [the academy] will take away his Oscar,” said Matthew Belloni, the former editor of the Hollywood Reporter and founder-partner of Puck, who was in the audience Sunday. “I think the feeling is that the Oscar is for the work and he earned the Oscar, but the punishment will be for his behavior.”

But his feelings have cooled since Smith’s apology. “I think he acknowledged the significance of the event, and that changes the way I look at it,” he said. “I was quite outraged that evening, but he’s a guy I have a lot of respect for. He’s been an incredible sort of positive force in the industry and incredibly professional his whole life. So, you know, I don’t I don’t feel any need to pile on the guy now that he’s taken responsibility for what he did.

Celebrities’ feelings about the situation seem as equally divided. Immediately after the show, comedian Tiffany Haddish said that the slap “was the most beautiful thing I ever seen because it made me believe that there are still men out there that love and care about their women, their wives.” Other defenders include One Direction member Liam Payne, rapper Nicki Minaj and actor Jameela Jamil.

The wife of a Supreme Court Justice was found to be complicit to the first coup attempt in American history. But the film industry is torn on how to handle a slap during the Oscars.

The moment has passed. He shouldn’t have been able or allowed to get on the stage and he did. He should have been asked to leave quietly, he wasn’t. He shouldn’t have be celebrated 20mins after assaulting someone, he was. It’s over. Damage done.

Easy solution! Mirror Marlon Brando and decline the award... Slap everyone who likes a silly joke!

Maybe just drop it and, like move on?

Let it go. We are all over it. Probably Will and Chris are too. They all should seek counseling though.

Take away his Oscar and keep him blocked from the Oscar's for a long time. Just because he's who he is does not excuse his actions. And why laugh first and then act out. Obviously he thought it was funny.

Who gives a flying F

They better do something and not delay. People are not happy about their lack of any action that evening.

Ban from attending Oscars for 5 years..... Next?

🤔😐🙄

The Academy should take his Oscar because his action was assault and he does not represent excellence; Suspend from attending the Oscars for 5 years, and cannot be eligible for a nomination for 5 years.

Well, it seems like a staged old cowboy western slap (AKA..' WILD WILD WEST')...Jada rolled her eyes and Will had to react..!!👀🏆🤔🤚🤚

Stop making excuses for Will Smith! He's a grown man not a toddler having a tantrum! That was obviously not his first resort to violence and he and Ms. Pinkett seem to have issues that need to be resolved. They're both inconsequential little people.

Narrator: they will do nothing.

They wouldn’t be if this were Tim Allen or Mel Gibson or Jon Voight. Hypocrisy and stupidity is killing Hollywood. Numbers are down, movies suck, and creativity is at an all time low. This was the worse thing for an industry that needs an image makeover.

We've digressed [further] into medieval and barbaric times. The Academy doesn't want to upset the BLM, cancel culture, and woke movement. It might as well have been Donald Trump who received the standing ovation. This pandemic has revealed everyone's true colors.

If you're torn on what to do, then you're part of the problem. STOP NORMALISING VIOLENCE

you know those signs people put on dogs to shame them. smith should have to wear one at next years oscars 'i must learn to use my words'

Well, they can always let Chris Rock throw him a punch back in front of millions of ppl. How else will ppl understand equality

Hire the TSA to run security around the stage. Will Smith Will have to go through metal detectors and have his ass probed before he can get anywhere close to a host or presenter.

Just 6 months ? Hell no. He freakin assaulted a man yelled profanity on live tv, disrespecting everyone not only in the theater but to all Academy members past & present who gave birth to & help nurture this industry for 93 years. In all that time no one was assaulted. He’s out

It’s easy. Kick him out of the academy. Have some standards.

Better security next year. No jokes. Just stand up, hand out statues, go home.

Gutless people are often conflicted. WhinePost

Put chain link fencing around the stage

Very dizzy, when heavy weights mistakenly miss their steps in life. Always learn to take a deep breath and reasonable dialogue before emotions overrides excellence.
