The planned merger of South Australia’s two biggest university will create a mega-institution that will drive the future economy, says Peter Malinauskas.

The University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia have agreed to formally progress discussions to merge, with the new institution, to be called Adelaide University, to be operational by January 2026, if all goes to plan. “It’s a potential magnet to attract some of the biggest brains and brightest students to South Australia. It has the potential to act as a magnet for businesses in other parts of the world to want to base themselves in Australia if you’ve got a university with the sort of scale they’re talking about here.”

“It’s research that drives rankings. But teaching is what employers are looking for. That’s what prepares students and graduates for work.”
