Florida jobless claims up slightly

First-time unemployment claims in Florida inched up last week, but the numbers remained relatively low.

The U.S. Department of Labor on Thursday issued a report that estimated 5,592 jobless applications were filed in Florida during the week that ended Jan. 28, up from 5,557 during the week that ended Jan. 21. Since the start of the year, Florida has averaged 6,429 claims a week. Meanwhile, the Department of Labor estimated that 183,000 claims were filed nationally last week, down from 186,000 the previous week.

Florida had a 2.5% unemployment rate in December, representing 271,000 Floridians qualified as unemployed from a workforce of 10.76 million. The national unemployment rate was 3.5%.
